Project teams are working in the context of ever-more complex, resource-constrained organizations while facing increasingly intense demands from leaders and clients to consistently exceed expectations. Yet, given the fast-paced, technical nature of our work and the diversity of both our team members and our project stakeholders, engaging in the “effective communication” required to balance competing demands can be a challenge.

In this session, we’ll dig into the multiple dimensions – referred to as the “seven lenses” -- for identifying and implementing “effective communication” in a project setting when balancing various stakeholder needs and business demands. We’ll explore research-based communication insights and best practices from the fields of organizational communication and business to deepen our skills related to successfully implementing the PMBOK stakeholder communication strategies.

As a result of this session, you’ll able to:

  • Leverage seven different “lenses” for identifying the communication-based issues influencing your team’s relationships and productivity
  • Define key the characteristics of informal networks
  • Define different types of power and how to leverage that power to strengthen working relationships and achieve targeted project outcomes
  • Differentiate between power and influence, and explore key characteristics of influential communication
  • Apply these communication, power and network concepts to real-world project management case studies
  • Discuss practical steps for using these new network and communication insights for navigating difficult team conversations
  • Define individual action items for using these new insights for both personal development and team coaching/development
